Motor Vehicle

For the first time in nearly a decade, more than 40,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2016. That marks a 6% increase over 2015 and a 14% increase over 2014 – the most dramatic two-year escalation in 53 years. This section explores crashes by type and breaks down data by:

  • Time of day, day of week and month
  • Holiday deaths
  • Death and injury by age
  • Economic and comprehensive costs

Additional focus is given to crashes involving young drivers, pedestrians and motorcyclists, as well as work zones, ATVs, school buses and emergency vehicles. We also present information for pertinent and emerging topics in traffic safety, including state laws, occupant protection, child passenger safety, speeding, impairment and assistive safety technology.
