The Home and Community section examines data for all preventable deaths and injuries that are not work-related and do not involve motor vehicles on streets and highways. Data is examined by age and causes in public and private spaces, including playgrounds and around water, and as related to rail and air transportation. Preventable injuries and death associated with sports and recreational activities, weather and bicycles are explored, and causes including fires, drowning and choking are addressed. Two of the leading causes of preventable injury and death – falls, which disproportionally affect older adults, and poisoning, largely driven by the opioid epidemic – also are covered in this section.
