Preliminary data show that gun-related deaths from preventable, intentional, and undetermined causes totaled 48,222 in 2022, a decrease of 1% from 48,830 deaths in 2021. Suicides account for 56% of deaths related to firearms, while 41% were homicides, and about 1% were preventable/accidental. Please note that the term gun is used on this page to refer to firearms that can be carried by a person, not to the larger class of weapon.

Since 2013, total gun-related deaths have increased 34%. Suicide deaths involving guns have increased 28%, while assault deaths have increased 75% since 2012. In 2022, gun-related suicide deaths increased 2.7%, while assault deaths decreased 6.2%.

Preventable or accidental gun-related deaths decreased 16% in 2022. From 2013 to 2022, preventable gun-related deaths decreased nearly 9%, from 505 to 461 deaths. Visit the data details tab to explore some of these trends in depth.
