Driver involvement rate among older drivers (age 65 and older) in fatal traffic crashes varies substantially among states. The eight states (including DC) with the lowest older driver involvement rate in fatal traffic crashes are:

  • Vermont (4.97 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • Rhode Island (5.28 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • District of Columbia (7.89 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • Delaware (8.03 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • Hawaii (8.61 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • New York (8.63 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • Massachusetts (9.35 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • New Jersey (9.62 per 100,000 licensed drivers)

The eight states with the highest older driver involvement rate in fatal traffic crashes are:

  • Mississippi (32.36 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • Missouri (26.36 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • Kentucky (25.58 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • South Dakota (25.31 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • Oklahoma (25.26 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • Wyoming (24.61 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • North Dakota (24.40 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
  • Nebraska (23.03 per 100,000 licensed drivers)
